Aside from your cake your reception tables will provide the main focus of attention for your wedding reception, and they will also be the area where you are most likely to apply decorations. Choosing wedding table decorations doesn’t need to be difficult, but it can be useful to know what your options are first.
To begin with you will probably cover your tables with linens. Usually you will have one cloth which covers the top and sides and then a smaller over cloth in a different color on top. You may also want to have coordinating chair covers and sashes. The table linens are one area where you will apply you wedding colors so make sure you obtain linens in the right colors.
Table centerpieces are decorations which will sit in the center of each table and you will probably have custom made arrangements to fit on the top table. The most popular type of centerpiece is floral arrangements made by your florist and which use the same flowers as your bouquet and ceremony arrangements. However, adding centerpieces to your flowers order can also add a significant amount to your wedding budget, so if money is tight you may want to consider making your own centerpieces.
Easy centerpieces involve candles, such as pillars and votives standing on decorative candle plates or in elaborate candelabras. Floating candles are very effective in clear glass vases with flower heads. Alternatively arrange your wedding favors in the center of each table and allow your guests to help themselves later on. Other centerpiece ideas include vintage style bird cages, pot plants, goldfish in large round bowls, or using the bridesmaid’s bouquets if you have enough of them!
Your place settings will also form part of the table decorations and should be given careful consideration too. You will need a place mat or charger plate, your dinner crockery, cutlery, glassware, napkins, and place cards. Again try to coordinate the place mat or charger plate and napkins with your wedding colors. Napkins will probably be included with your table linens. If you don’t like the crockery, cutlery and glassware provided by your venue or caterers, then you will need to look into hiring some which coordinates better.
Finally think about all the small details and finishing touches. A scattering of table crystals, flower petals and tea lights looks amazing, but check whether or not you can have lit candles on your tables with your venue first. Think about napkin rings, place card holders, wedding favors, menus, table numbers or names and small dishes of treats such as nuts, mints or candies. You may also want to add in some fun stuff too, such as disposable wedding cameras, bubbles, blowers, streamers, confetti and party poppers.
Be careful not to overcrowd your tables and make sure that everything you add is carefully placed and chosen to coordinate with your wedding style, theme (if having one) and colors. Purchase a range of decorations and have a trial run at home if possible to see how your tables might look. It will give you some idea as to how much space you will need and how everything will coordinate together. You can then choose to take something away or add something else in.
